Turkish Scholars to speak at SOAS hijab debate Top turkish theological and religion scholars are to attend a debate
Top turkish theological and religion scholars are to attend a debate on the Hiajb this coming saturday at the School of Oriental Studies (SOAS), London. Dr Birgul Ayman of the Ankara University Faculty of Political Science department and Dr Sahin Filiz of the Selcuk University Theology department in Turkey will debate on the Hijab from a theological, political and historic basis. It is likely that the debate will centre on whether or not the Hijab’s use is endorsed in the Qur’an as Dr Filiz has previously published and sold a best-selling book detailing his belief that the there is no such imperative in the Qu’ran and that women should be free to use or not use the traditional headscarf. The event is organised by The Ataturk Organisation in England and Alevi, and will be chaired by SOAS Turkish department’s Dr Bengisu. For more information on the event which is to begin at 1500, please call 020 7241 6285.
