RAMADHAAN-THE MONTH OF QUR’AN

Apart from other significance of the blessed month of Ramadan, the revelation of almost all the Divine Books especially the Glorious Qur’an took place in this very month. Praising the month of Ramadan out of the other months, Almighty Allah says, “The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion. So whoever of you witnesses this month should fast it”. (Suratul Baqarah 2:185)

The Ayah shows that the Glorious Qur’an is an integral part of the month of Ramadan. For this inseparable connection, it is Sunnah Mu’akkadah to recite the complete Qur’an at least once in Taraweeh Salaah during the month of Ramadan.

It is recorded by Imaam Bukhari on the authority of Sayyedinaa Fatimah that the Nabee of Allah told her that Jibraeel would rehearse the Glorious Qur’an with him once in a year, during the month of Ramadan, but he did so twice in the year he passed away.

The companions and those who follow their footsteps amongst the pious servants of Allah would put aside all the religious actives to focus on the recitation of the Glorious Qur’an during the blessed month. Ibne Rajab Al-Hanbali mentioned in his book ‘Lata'if al-Ma'arif’ the practice of companions and their followers during Ramadan. He stated that 'Aishaah would recite from the pages of the Qur’an at the beginning of the day in Ramadan till the sun had risen. He wrote about Imaam Maalik that he would leave narrating Hadeeth and other academic activities and engage himself in reciting the Qur’an. Ibne Rajab further mentioned that Sufyaan al-Thawri would leave other acts of worship and stick to reciting the Qur’an.

Gone are the days when the pleasant and beautiful cadences of Qur’anic recitation used to be heard from every Muslim house in the morning and in the evening. Today Muslim houses are echoed with music, song and movie sounds even in the month of Ramadan.

Scrutinize ourselves that how much we recite the Glorious Qur’an leave alone implementing it in our daily lives. This is the book that leads to progress and causes destruction if not give due respect. Imaam Muslim recorded that the Nabee of Allah is reported to have said, “Allah will elevate some nations through this book and degrade others with it.”

It is not too late. Let’s revive the recitation of the Qur’an from the month it was revealed-the month of Ramadan. Try to complete the whole Qur’an at least once in Ramadan and once throughout the year. Abu  Umamah heard the Nabee of Allah when he said, “Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it.” (Saheeh Muslim)
