 Visitors look at photographs at the exhibition honoring Muslim Albanians who rescued Jews during World War II.

 

 

CAIRO — The result of a painstaking drive to dust off old, ignored archives, a photo exhibition in West Jerusalem is honoring Albanian Muslims who risked their own lives to hide and protect Jews hunted by the Nazis, Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday, November 4.

"Albania was the only country in Europe in which there were more Jews after the war than there had been before the war," American photographer Norman Gershman said at the opening of his exhibition at Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial.

Before World War II, there were only 200 Jews in Muslim-majority Albania, which had a total population of 800,000.

After the war, there were many more Jews after Jewish refugees from some half dozen European countries fled the Nazi persecution and sought shelter in Albania, according to Israeli officials.

Gershman, a Jew, said Albanian King Zog, who ruled the country from 1928 to 1939, personally saved the Weizmann family, who fled to Albania after 1938's Nazi crackdown on Jews in Germany.

The Code of Besa  exhibition features black and white photographs of Albanians holding family photos and awards honoring their heroism.

Thanks to the Albania-Israel Friendship Association Gershman was able to trace many Albanian Muslims who rescued Jews from the Nazi.

He spent four years in Albania and met families of the heroes, photographed them and learnt about moving rescue operations.

Israel has already honored 63 Albanians as "Righteous Among the Nations," a title granted to non-Jews who helped Jews escape Nazi persecution.

Code of Besa

The late father of Enver Alia Sheqer (L) rescued Yeoshua Baruchowic (R) from a Nazi convoy.

Gershman said the Albanians have left a legacy that runs in the face of the stereotyped portrayal of Muslims in the West.

"It's all about good people," he noted.

"They think that all Muslims are terrorists - and that's crazy."

Among those Gershman photographed is Enver Alia Sheqer, whose late father rescued Yeoshua Baruchowic from a Nazi convoy and sheltered him at his home for three years until the war was over.

For decades, Baruchowic, a dentist in Mexico, exchanged letters with Sheqer, 50, and his father, who died in 2004.

He calls Sheqer his "brother."

"It's glorious. It's something I waited to do all my life," Baruchowic said when meeting Sheqer at the exhibition.

Sheqer said asserted that his father was motivated by the principles of Islam.

"My father was a devout Muslim," he said. "He believed that to save one life is to enter paradise."

He said his father had to help Baruchowic because of the Albanian code of "Besa," which means "to keep the promise."

"It is a virtue that has characterized the Albanian people for centuries. It means faith and trust," Albanian Charge d'Affaires in Israel Qirjako Kureta told the Post.

He said Albanians saw Jews as fellow human beings who needed shelter.

"They neither gave up their Jews nor supplied the Germans with names of Jews in their villages."

Supporting Hitler by Muslms is not same as hating Jews

About this great piece of Muslim_Jewish Cooperation, one is happy that it is finally known.

 

But Muslims have always protected the Jews until 60 years ago until Israel was set up while punishing poor, innocent Muslims and Christians of Palestine.

 

Now, the reason many Muslims supported Hitler and Japan has nothing to do with anti-Jewish sentiment or failure to note Hitler's crimes. Muslims were occupied by England and France in many places in Asia and Africa. They were in terrible shape and suffering, in some cases for more than 100 years. So, they followed the old adage: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. If England became weakened they felt that they would become independent. In fact, after WWII, even after England won, it had to decolonize because it had become so weakened.

 

By the way, this is the same that Israel is doing today supporting India against Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kashmir and Iran - enemies of Islam and Muslim is being viewed as friends of Israel.

 

Also, why have some Muslims introduced filthy comment from the Bible on this occasion commemorating the contributions of Albanian Muslims? I suppose they have forgotten a saying (hadith) of the Prophet (peace be upon him). A munafiq (hypocrite) is a person who when he debates/argues proceeds to insult the other party. This means the person has no genuine observation, no logic, no due process, just wild accusations and acts. It is an extreme group from among such persons that are killing Muslims and non-Muslims indiscriminately with bombs in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan and, at one time, in Algeria.

 

In fact, the Jewish brother who brought up Muslim participation or support of Hitler on this occasion has also acted in a similarly mindless fashion. He should have held himself in check. But there was no patience.

 

God bless and may there be patience, honesty and justice for without them there will be no peace.

First, the number of people of Jewish descent serving in Hitler's armies was a handful of people. The number of Jews murdered by Hitler averaged several thousand per day and lasted to the last day of the War. People using the argument of the handful of people of Jewish descent ignore seek mainly to deflect blame of non-Jews from the Holocaust and as an expression of contempt to the survivors this immorally blames the actual survivors with the deeds of those who left the Jewish people to aid our enemies.

 

Jews are grateful that Muslims of good conscience risked their lives to save us from the Nazis. This was true not just in Europe but North Africa as well. Concentration Camps were established and the same legal structures used to kill the Jews of Europe followed Hitler's Armies to Africa. Mercifully, those plans were defeated by the advancing Allied armies.

 

All that said, it is a sad terrible truth that many Muslims prayed for Hitler, fought for Hitler, conspired with Hitler and the Nazis, before, during and AFTER the war. This is indisputable historical fact and it was done in significant numbers.

 

As a Jew, I find it utterly repellent that Hezbollah, Hamas and Syrian officials and groups use the Hitler salute, that they have done so for years and continue to do so to this day.

 

Tonight begins the Jewish New Year, as always, my coreligionists will pray for a good new year for all mankind and that we be granted the chance to present ourselves to the Creator next year.

and the sooner the better. Let's start with who started World War I and II. The first world war started when a Serb assassinated Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in August 1914. The European powers had entangling treaties that resulted in England, France, Italy and Russia warring against Germany, Austria and Turkey. The United States of America entered the war on the side of the Allies in April 1917. The Arabs sided with the Allies to gain independence from the Ottomans and were promised their independence. Unfortunately, the Allies reneged on their promises to the Arabs at Versailles in 1919. The Second World War was begun when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in September 1939. The Arabs (except for Saudi Arabia) sided with the Axis. The Palestinian Arabs and Iraq were fascist. The Palestinian Jews fought with the British. As for war crimes against the Palestinian Arabs, the Arabs have no greater enemy than themselves. They merely have to look in the mirror as to who to blame. More to come, children, . . .

All Muslim countries have saved the Jews since centuries ago where they were considered parasites and pariah in Europe. Instead of being grateful they have stabbed their hosts, includind the Ottoman at the time when they were goverving Palestine. European zionists infiltrated the Ottoman government to make it fall. Same think with Muslim government during Muslim Spain. And who started World I and II? Who is committing war crimes agains Palestinians? And what about all the wars for Israel? Iraq, and now they are pushing US for a war against Iran, Syria and more?

 

Holocaust against Muslim and in particular Palestinian should be recognized officially.
