Q. Why should women be obedient to their husband?

Response:

Allah orders us in the Qur’an to obey the order of Rasulullah

"Make not the calling of the Messenger among you as your calling of one another. Allah knows those of you who slip away under shelter. And let those who oppose the Messenger's commandment ( i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements, etc.) beware, lest some Fitnah (afflictions) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them." [Qur’an, Surah # 24 Ayah # 63]

Allah has made clear that those who oppose the Sunnah of Rasulullah are headed for the punishment of Allah.

"And whatever the Prophet gives you, accept it and whatever he forbids you, abstain (from it)" [Quran, Surah # 59 Ayah # 07]

"The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. "We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His messengers." And they say: "We hear, and we obey: (we seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys." [Quran, Surah # 2 Ayah # 285]

"And obey Allah and the Messenger; that ye may obtain mercy." [Qur’an, Surah # 3 Ayah # 132]

"O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and make not vain your deeds!" [Qur’an, Surah # 47 Ayah # 33]

"Those are limits set by Allah those who obey Allah and His Messenger will be admitted to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, to abide therein (for ever) and that will be the supreme achievement. " [Qur’an, Surah #4; Ayah # 13]

"In the Messenger of Allah is a good example for you to follow." [Qur’an Surah #33 Ayah #21]

Let me cite one story of Hadhrat Asma (Radhiyallaho anha)‘s interview with the Prophet (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam); hope this will suffice for the importance of obedience of women to their husband. Allah knows the best.

Asma Bint Yazid (Radhiyallaho Anha) came to the Prophet (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam) and said:

“O, Prophet of Allah! You are dearer to me than my parents. My Muslim women have deputed me as their representative to talk to you on their behalf. Verily you are the Prophet of Allah for both men and women. We stay for most part of our time within the four walls of our houses. We remain pinned to our duties of fulfilling the sexual desires of men, bearing children for them and looking after their homes. Notwithstanding all this, men excel us in getting rewards for things ehich we are unable to do. They go and say their daily prayers and weekly Jumu’ah in the masjid, visit the sick, attend the funerals, perform Hajj after Hajj and, above all, fight in the way of Allah. When they go for Hajj or Jihaad, we look after their property, bring up their children and weave cloth for them. Do we not share their rewards with them”?

The Prophet (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam) addressing the Sahabah sitting round him, said:

“Did you ever hear a woman asking a better question?”

Sahabah replied: “O, Prophet of Allah! We never thought that a woman could ever put such a question.”

The Prophet (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam) addressing Asma said:

“Listen attentively, and then go and tell the ladies who have sent you that when a woman seeks the pleasure of her husband and carries out her domestic functions to his satisfaction, she gets the same reward as the men get for all their services to Allah.”

Hadhrat Asma (Radhiyallaho anha) returned very happily after getting this reply to her question.

Obedience to and good behavior towards husbands is a very great asset for the women, provided they know its value.

The Sahabah once said to the Prophet (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam):

“In foreign countries people prostrate before their kings and chiefs. You deserve such reverence much more.”

He (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam) said: “No. If it were permissible to prostrate before any body besides Allah, I would asked the women to prostrate before their husbands.”

He (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam) then said, “By him Who has my life in His hand, a woman cannot do what she owes to her husband.”

It is reported in a Hadith that once a camel bowed in prostration before the Prophet (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam). The Sahabah on seeing this, said:

“When this animal prostrates before you, why should we not have this honor too?”

He (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam) replied:

“Never. If I could make somebody prostrate before anybody besides Allah, I would ask the wives to prostrate before their husbands.”

The following is reported to have been said by the Prophet (Sallallaho Aleihe Wasallam) in this connection:

1. “A woman whose husband is pleased with her at the time of her death goes straight into Paradise.”

2. “A woman is cursed by the angels if her husband is displeased with her, and she stays away from him in anger from the night.”

3. “The prayers of two persons hardly rises beyond their heads in its flight to Heaven. These two persons are a run-away slave and a disobedient wife.”

If the woman establishes the five prayers, fasts her month (Ramadaan), protects her private part, and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: "Enter Jannah from whichever door you wish".

The Hadith was narrated by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad and Ibn Habaan in his Saheeh. It was authenticated by Al-Albaani

Whatever written of truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah alone knows best and He is the only source of strength.

Alahumma infa`ni bima `allamtani wa `allamni ma yanfa`uni!

OH ALLAH! Make useful for me what You taught me

and teach me knowledge that will be useful to me.

(Aameen)
